fry bread - gluten free or not if you please (biscuit too)

I was reading A Grave Denied by Dana Stabenow on Sunday morning and there was this description of fry bread and coffee that made my mouth water.

Now you must realize, the above picture is how my kitchen normally looks on a Saturday or Sunday morning.  Every burner of the stove is being used, something is in the crockpot, there might be something in my thermal pot (in this case yogurt), and I am trying out something new.  My Beloved just chuckles.  And reaps the rewards.  So in the middle of this, I look up some fry bread recipes and go about putting a gluten free one together so we can have it for breakfast.

fry bread (gluten free or not)

1/4 cup potato flour  (if you would like to make this without gluten free flours, just use 1 cup flour)

1/4 cup millet flour

1/4 cup amaranth

1/4 cup corn

1/2 teaspoon baking soda

1/2 teaspoon cream of tartar

1/4 cup milk powder (I used non-instant)

1/4 teaspoon salt

warm water

In a skillet, heat a half of inch of oil.

Mix all the dry ingredients together.  I actually whisk them to make sure there are no lumps.

Mix in enough warm water to make a stiff dough.  I started with a quarter cup and ended up closer to a half cup.  But do not add too much water because you need to roll out the dough.

Divide the dough into four.  Roll out each piece into a circle.  Put into the hot oil.

They were done when they were golden and floated to the surface.

We ate them with beans, eggs, and honey.  VERY yummy!  Made our bellies haaapppyyy!!!

I did a little bit of experimenting with this dough.  I took a golf ball size bit and baked it just like a biscuit, 425 degrees Fahrenheit for about ten minutes.  This dough made a fabulous baked biscuit.  More ideas!  I am getting around to figuring out my scone recipe in a gluten free from.  I really need to buy more flours though.  Going to the grocery store has not been on the list recently.

Try the fry bread with honey and a cup of sweet tea or a cup of coffee with cream and brown sugar.  Happy belly!

the baby quilt is done and delivered!

I pieced a hundred nine squares together.  Put organic batting and a flannel back on it and quilted for eight hours.  On my machine.  That was a long day but it was a day that went by rather quickly.  Every time I looked up at the clock, another couple of hours passed by.

Then came the binding.  I thought the binding was going to be rather quick and all done on the machine.  But there is three precent lycra in that fabric.  I had from another project.  It was just enough that I ended up hand stitching the binding down.

But in the end, the quilt is done and I am very pleased with how it turned out.  I delivered it today and found out that the babe this is for was born yesterday.  Momma and babe are both doing well.  He has all ten fingers and toes.  A lovely day.

baby hats and madness of flannel.....

This is the last of the baby gift for the Tall Short Person's friend.  Two baby hats.  They are a silvery green and a silvery blue.  The blue is smaller then the green and both are made of cotton.  It was actually what I was doing last night instead of blogging.  My Beloved had to close the store so I sat and watched a picture show after the library and crocheted.  Sometimes that is just what you have to do.

I have also been doing a bit of weaving after work.  With where my loom sits, it is much easier to weave when the sun is out.  We have had a few rainy days and it has been hard.

I did go a little mad at the fabric store when it came to flannel.  It was $1.99 a yard.  I will show you what I make of it as I go.  My Beloved already helped me start cutting it out.  Two hands do really make the work go faster.  Or maybe it is the laughter.  We do so like to laugh.

Please keep the people of Japan and all others who have been affected by the earthquake and tsunami in your prayers.

soft shirt

My Beloved requested a Lady made soft shirt.  I went through my stash and found a couple pieces of very soft flannel.  The one in the picture is his first choice.  It is a very tiny brown plaid, almost square pattern.  It is his favorite color clothes currently brown.

I laid it all out on my worktable and got to pinning.  And then to cutting (I really like my worktable.  It make the cutting go much faster).

Then there was more pinning and stitching.  Tonight I got the buttons and the buttonholes done.

And my Beloved has a soft shirt.  There is another piece of fabric that is going to be made up as well.  Maybe I can steal it when I am not feeling well!

baby sling

The Tall Short Person had a friend who had a son this weekend.  The babe is wee!  So I asked my Tall Short Person if she would like me to make her friend a baby sling or a hat.  She said both.  So I started with the sling.  I used the directions from Amanda Blake Soule's book Handmade Home. The young lady is of a height that I chose to cut the fabric 56 inches by 22 inches.  I hemmed both sides.

I folded the fabric in half longwise.  I then measured in 4 inches on the non-folded edge.

I cut a curve on that edge and then french seamed it.

That is all there is too it.  I was amazed at how simple this was to make.  Hopefully, the new momma will be pleased.  I still have a hat to make!
