galette bressane with lemon curd

There is a group of bakers out in the world who call themselves the Bread Baking Babes.  I read on of them who writes a blog.  They do a monthly bread baking challenge.  The only constant is that all the recipes include yeast.  I have to admit that reading the choices give me ideas.

When I happened across the month where a galette was involved, I was curious  I have really enjoyed the galette bressane I have been making.  I have even started to use part whole wheat flour.  This recipe called for a creme fraiche that was flavored with lemon.  Similar to a lemon curd.  My Mom and Dad had gone on a trip to Bermuda and one of the gifts she brought back was a jar of lemon curd.  I figured why not.

I substituted a half cup to a cup of lemon curd for the creme fraiche in the recipe.  I was pleasantly surprised.  I would call this more a dessert then a breakfast but that is how I feel about lemon.  I now wish to try the original recipe and see how it is.  Of course, there will be changes because there always is!

refurbishing

I pulled six skirts out of my closet this weekend.  For one reason or another, I had stopped wearing them.  I was really wanting a black skirt to wear with my new silk shirt I had made but my black wool skirts were no longer comfortable to wear.  Not comfortable for a couple of reasons, but the main reason is that I changed where I wear my skirts.  I used to like really high waists, but between soft yoga/skating clothes and refurbishing another skirt that has become my favorite work skirt, that has changed.  Also, these wool skirts felt long enough at one point but then they started to feel to short. Yes, right above my ankles felt too short.  You may laugh.

I cut an inch and a half off the waist band.  Faced it and tacked the facing down.  The skirts now sit where I like them and because they sit so much lower, they are longer.  I did not have to go to the store for either fabric or clothes so I think this is even a bigger when then just not putting out any money.  I like them so much better now that I was thinking that I really need to find some white shirts that fit me well.  That is a struggle.  My shoulders are much too broad for most women shirts.  Maybe I should go to the men's department.

I have a linen skirt I am thinking about playing with too.  The lining binds my stride.  But I will not know if that is enough until I do some more refurbishing.  If does make me smile.

my flowers are starting to grow

I spent a lot of time in the gardne this weekend.  My flowers are growing!  I weeded.  I dug.  I spent time with Small Mister in the garden.  He likes to help me with the garden fork.  Push it in.  Pull it up.  Shake it.  He pretend with my garden tools.  Which is how I got wacked in the forehead.  Oh well!

I also got a little bit of work done on the Teahouse.  I am patching due to replacing a roof.  The cob sancutary was never finished but I need more sanctuary now so I am working on it.  A small step at a time.  I was hoping to work on it today but grocery shopping was a much higher priority.

long work week

It has been a long work week.  The upgrade went well but now we are finding all the little bits that are broken or new ways to do things.  That just takes time.

Which means that I do not have the time and energy at home I would wish too.  I am putting one quilt top together and working on the squares on another.  On a normal week, one of those would be done but not this week.

I actually had to order supplies so I am waiting on two different types of batting.  A large roll for quilts and two large rolls to make "dirt bag" mattresses.  We take them camping with us.  We left the ones we had already made on the mountain.  We have a bed there now.  It has been a long time since I had to wait on supplies to come to the house.  I know that I need to work on patience.

I need to sit and work on the computer.  Hopefully, that will happen Sunday morning before Small Mister comes to be with us.  And maybe some cob on the wall?  I can garden with hime but not build a wall.  It is too tall right now.

Every thing feels like it is in the middle.  Maybe I just need to make myself some more tea and cookies.  Or sleep.  I actually think that is the real need.

chocolate, hazelnut, oatmeal cookies

Small Mister has become my cooking helper.  He is tall enough to stand on a chair and stir now.  I worked a thirteen hour day today and needed tea and cookies.  So I put some together for us.  Gluten free.  Chocolate.  Not too sweet.  Perfect after a very long day.

chocolate hazelnut pecan cookies

Note:  adapted from Small Treats, Small Plates and treehugger.com.  I made enough just for us after a long day.

2 tablespoons butter

1 tablespoon plus 1 teaspoon granulated sugar

1 tablespoon brown sugar

1/4 teaspoon vanilla

1 egg yolk

2 tablespoon sorghum flour

1 tablespoon quinoa flour

1 tablespoon cocoa

1/8 teaspoon salt

2 tablespoon hazelnut flour

2 tablespoons quick oatmeal

Preheat oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit.

Cream butter, sugars, and vanilla in a small bowl.  Add the rest of the ingredients and mix well.

Cover a baking sheet with a silpat or parchment paper.  Drop teaspoons of dough on the baking sheet.  Bake for ten minutes.

Eat warm!  After a very long day.
